NJ Dems scramble for Obama's 'electrifying' finaleDENVER -- Having been thrilled by Ted Kennedy, charmed by Michelle Obama and surprised by Barack Obama, excitement among Democrats continued to rise in anticipation of the first lengthy address by their presidential nominee this evening.
Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-Mercer, said tonight will be "more electrifying than it was last night or the night before, if that's entirely possible.
"We may be able to harness enough energy to light the skies of Denver, Colo.," Watson Coleman said.
The Rev. Reginald Jackson, head of the Black Ministers Council of New Jersey, who had been among Sen. Hillary Clinton's top New Jersey fund-raisers, said Obama will present his vision for the country while refuting the notion that he lacks experience to be president.
Clinton helped erase some of that doubt this week, Jackson said, but "Barack is the one who has to close the deal."
Democrats expect some policy -- health care, jobs and economy -- balanced with the hope and inspiration he has to improve the country, which Democrats contend has fallen on hard times under the Bush administration.
"He's going to talk about what he sees this country can become -- his vision," Jackson said. "Every vision is born from a burden, and our country is faced with a tremendous burden."
Obama's speech at Invesco Field, home of the Denver Broncos football team, is expected to be filled to capacity. Joe Cryan, the New Jersey Democrats' state chairman, was scrambling to scrounge extra tickets; the delegation got about 300, one for each delegate and a guest.
"The problem is we have 700-plus people out here, and all of them want to see this speech tonight," Cryan said.
The address comes on the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech -- there will be a tribute to him and remarks by Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., and two of King's children on stage tonight -- and a sense of closure permeated the atmosphere.
"It looks like we're now, 45 years later, fulfilling Dr. King's dream where we judge people by the content of their character and not the color of their skin," said Sen. Shirley Turner, D-Mercer.
Others, however, said nothing will be gained by the historic nomination if Obama isn't elected in November.
"America will not change just by nominating someone who comes from a different place," U.S. Rep. Robert E. Andrews, D-Haddon Heights, said. "America will only change by electing someone from a different place."
Gov. Jon S. Corzine said this year's election is an opportunity to make the dream a reality.
"There is a vision of a better world for our children and our grandchildren that's going to be talked about tonight, and we've got to fight like hell to make sure it happens," Corzine said.
Durbin on Obama: 'Sometimes the moment picks you'DENVER -- The morning before Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama gives his acceptance speech, New Jersey's convention delegates were priming themselves for the next two-plus months to help the Illinois senator get elected to the Oval Office.
The delegation heard from from Obama's home-state counterpart in the U.S. Senate, Dick Durbin, who gave an inside look into Obama's meteoric rise from a state legislator to presidential nominee within four years.
Durbin said at the 2000 Democratic national convention, Obama could not even get a credential to get onto the convention floor. Now, he'll be addressing roughly 75,000 at Invesco Field and millions at home Thursday night. When Obama ran the idea of running for president by Durbin and exhibited some reserve about running for the highest office in the land, Durbin said he told Obama to embrace the situation he found himself in.
"Sometimes you can pick the moment, but sometimes the moment picks you," Durbin said.
Durbin will be introducing Obama tonight. "My four minutes of greatness," he quipped.
But stronger talk came from former Gov. Jim Florio, who said Democrats would have to toughen up and start attacking Republican presumptive nominee Sen. John McCain on the issues, because the GOP would be going full force on Obama and his character.
"I'm worried the Swift-boat incident will look like kindergarten after they get through with Obama," said Florio. "This cannot be a New Testament campaign -- you know, turn the other cheek. This has got to be an Old Testament campaign."
U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, D-Long Branch, said the state would have to work hard to not only get Obama elected by getting people out to vote, but by making sure the campaign does not delve into tit-for-tat mudslinging.
"We have to make sure this election is about the issues. They (the GOP) want to make it about personality," said Pallone, who was followed by the rest of New Jersey's Democratic congressional delegation.
New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch also dealt with state politics, talking about education, energy policy reform, and pension reform -- many of the problems New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine currently faces back at home.
Bon Jovi joins Springsteen on no-show list for DNCDENVER -- Leading up to convention week and in the opening days of the event, hopes had abounded among some delegates that New Jersey musical sons Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen would perform Thursday night at Sen. Barack Obama's presidential acceptance speech.
Then word came the Boss wasn't playing. Thursday morning the schedule of speakers and performers was released and absent from that list was Bon Jovi -- meaning the state went from potentially hogging the spotlight to being completely out of it within days.
The schedule lists performers such as will.i.am., Jennifer Hudson, Sheryl Crow, Michael McDonald, and Obama favorite Stevie Wonder. But no Springsteen or Bon Jovi, unless one shows up unannounced.
Bon Jovi is scheduled to hold a fund-raiser for Obama Sept. 5 at his New Jersey home, so the artist is not completely shunned. Democratic State Committee chairman Joseph Cryan said either way supporters would be seeing Bon Jovi and Obama together eventually.
And the Sept. 5 fund-raiser also benefited the state party.
"It's win-win," said Cryan.
Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, D-Mercer, who earlier this week could be spotted sporting a Springsteen shirt at the delegation breakfast, said he was still not convinced the Boss would not show up.
"Remember all those Stone Pony shows," Gusciora said, referencing the frequent surprise appearances Springsteen would make at the famed Asbury Park rock club.
"I still think he might show up," he said.
